Our Story: The History of Glensheiling

A Name Rooted in the Valley

Glensheiling was the original name of the farm, a name deeply connected to Scottish roots. “Glen” translates to a valley, and “Sheiling” refers to a small cottage. Together, they paint a perfect picture of our humble home nestled in the heart of the Midlands.

From a Cabbage Patch to a Sanctuary

Glensheiling Caravan Park began in 2001, quite literally as a cabbage patch.

Recently widowed and with her five-year-old son by her side, Julie began this journey alongside her father, who was 80 years old at the time. Together, they started from scratch. They planted the grass, tended the trees, levelled the sites, and slowly transformed open land into the beloved family haven it is today.

A Legacy of Wisdom: Julie’s Father

Julie’s father was a pillar of the Nottingham Road community. Having lived here for 65 years, he originally ran a trout hatchery on the very land where the park stands today. He was a man of a thousand stories and a lifetime of wisdom.

"Only God is perfect."

— A favourite saying of a man who saw the beauty in life's imperfections.

A gifted woodcarver, many of his hand-carved works can still be found in the boma, affectionately known as “Goofy’s Den.” These carvings remain a tangible reminder of the man who helped build Glensheiling with his own hands.

The "Wise Old Owl"

In his later years, Julie's father stepped back from the physical maintenance of boats and buildings to dedicate himself to what he loved most: people. Guests would often find him deep in conversation, sharing wisdom and wit. Many affectionately called him the “wise old owl,” and he could keep visitors entertained for hours on end. He lived to the remarkable age of 97, and his presence is still felt in every corner of the park.

Carrying the Torch

Our "regulars" who return year after year still speak of him and miss him dearly - as do we.

Today, his legacy lives on. It is in the carvings, it is in the shade of the trees he planted, and most importantly, it is in the spirit of warmth, hospitality, and community that defines Glensheiling. When you stay with us, you aren't just a guest; you are part of a story that has been unfolding for over two decades.
